Innovative Community Engagement

The Hippiecampus Project, a leader in innovative community engagement, is excited to announce its new 5 Rhythms dance classes in the Northland region. These classes are designed to welcome individuals from all walks of life to participate in a dance practice that supports emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Led by Dennis Wickstead, a sound engineer with a deep background in sports performance and coaching, the sessions create a unique space where high-quality sound and expressive movement merge to foster personal growth and community connection.

Developed by Gabrielle Roth in the late 1970s, the 5 Rhythms method is a vibrant movement practice that invites participants to explore and express through five distinct rhythmic patterns: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. Each rhythm mirrors a natural energy pattern and element, guiding participants through a series of experiences that reflect the natural world and human existence. This approach to dance emphasizes a comprehensive view of well-being, highlighting the benefits of flexibility, strength, and dynamic movement that are accessible to everyone.

From its initial session in a Waipu Community hall with only one participant to now engaging over 30 individuals regularly, The Hippiecampus Project's 5 Rhythms classes have set a new standard for inclusive fitness and community in New Zealand. The feedback underscores the program's success in providing a space free from judgment, where individuals can genuinely express themselves, supported by an immersive sound experience.

Dennis Wickstead leverages his extensive experience in sound engineering and high-performance sports to enhance the dance sessions, ensuring an immersive environment that complements the 5 Rhythms method. "This practice transcends the realm of athletes, opening doors for anyone interested in discovering new aspects of strength, enhancing flexibility, and delving into their movement potential," says Wickstead. "Our goal is to offer a welcoming space where every individual can harness the benefits of dance, rooted in the enriching principles of the 5 Rhythms method."

The Hippiecampus Project's 5 Rhythms dance classes represent more than a physical workout; they are an opportunity for individuals to embark on a path of discovery, healing, and connection. By incorporating this method into their programming, The Hippiecampus Project reaffirms its dedication to pioneering new methods for fostering individual and community development.
